It was at the end of the 1940s that the mining activities of quartzite extraction began in São Tomé das Letras, in the south of Minas Gerais, executed with the use of drill bits for drilling, manual disassembly of the blocks and carts for the transportation of extracted ore.
A produção era muito pequena era uma atividade basicamente familiar, executada desde a época pela família Capistrano, o que demonstra sua tradição no ramo e pedras de revestimento.
The family company, located in Pico do Gavião, is also the oldest enterprise to have legality in the extraction of ore in the region, with the first quartzite mining ordinance of the municipality of São Tomé das Letras.
During the following decades, the market grew and new technologies were adapted and used in the extraction. With this growing trend, job creation has become one of the main characteristics of activity in the municipality and region.
